Membership FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

Do aged care workers need professional indemnity insurance?

Yes. Whether you’re self-employed, a sole trader,= or working as a contractor, professional indemnity insurance is essential for aged care workers. If a client, their family,= or a third party makes a claim against you in relation to the professional services or personal care you provide, you could be held liable for legal costs and compensation. Having the right cover in place protects you and your business against potential risks.

What types of insurance do aged care workers need?

At a minimum, aged care workers should consider both professional indemnity and public liability insurance. Professional indemnity covers claims of negligence, errors or professional misconduct in relation to the services you provide. Public liability covers claims for property damage or injury to a client or member of the public. For example, if someone is injured while in your care or at a client’s home. This is general advice only and does not take into account your individual financial situation or unique needs. Feel free to contact us for further information.

Is a self-employed aged care worker covered by their employer's insurance policy?

Not necessarily. If you’re self-employed or working as a contractor in the aged care sector, your employer’s policy may not extend to cover you. In many cases, self-employed aged care workers and sole traders are required to arrange their own insurance coverage. IICT membership gives you access to insurance that reflects the services you provide, so you can work with confidence. Be sure to review the policy wording carefully to ensure the coverage aligns with your specific situation.

Does IICT membership include insurance for aged care?

Membership and insurance are two separate products. Your IICT membership gives you professional recognition, credibility and access to insurance, but the policy itself is purchased separately. This keeps things flexible, so you only pay for the cover that suits your unique needs and practice.

Can I cover aged care alongside other modalities in one membership?

Yes. IICT currently approves 1,400+ modalities, so if you practise other complementary therapies alongside aged care, such as remedial massage or disability support, you can have all your modalities recognised under one simple membership, with insurance access covering all approved modalities listed on your membership.

What qualifications do I need to join IICT as an aged care worker?

IICT recognises practitioner-level qualifications only. For aged care, a Certificate III in Individual Support or equivalent is a common entry-level qualification, though requirements may vary depending on your specific modality and region. Your qualifications will be assessed at the time of application. If you’re unsure whether your training meets IICT’s minimum requirements, contact us before applying.
