Membership FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

What Type of Insurance Do Disability Support Workers Need?

Disability support workers should consider both professional indemnity insurance and public liability insurance. Professional indemnity covers legal costs, compensation and legal defence costs arising from claims of negligence or errors in the professional services you provide. Public liability covers bodily injury, property damage or accidents that occur while you’re working with clients, whether in their home, a facility or another setting. Together, these two policies give you well-rounded protection against the most common risks in disability care.

Why Do Disability Support Workers Need Professional Indemnity Insurance?

Disability support workers provide highly personalised care, often working independently in client homes or community settings. If a client, their family or an NDIS provider makes a professional indemnity claim against you, alleging negligence, a breach of duty or an error in your care plan, professional indemnity insurance covers your legal fees, legal defence costs and any compensation or settlements that follow. Without it, those financial losses come directly out of your pocket.

Is Insurance a Requirement for NDIS Providers and Support Workers?

For registered NDIS providers, holding appropriate insurance is a requirement under the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission standards. Independent support workers and sole traders working under the NDIS are also strongly advised to hold their own cover, as a client or provider’s policy may not extend to you. If you are self-employed or operating as a small business, having your own insurance policy in place is essential to protect your income and livelihood.

Can I Access Insurance Through IICT Without a Membership?

No, IICT membership is required before you can access insurance. Your membership gives you professional recognition, credibility and access to insurance suited to the nature of your work as a disability support worker. Think of it as the foundation your career is built on.

Does IICT Membership Cover Me If I Work Across Multiple Settings?

IICT membership recognises you as a professional regardless of where you work. When it comes to your insurance policy, cover claims and policy terms will depend on the specific policy you choose, we recommend reviewing the policy wording carefully to ensure it reflects your circumstances, including the settings and services you provide. If you’re unsure, contact us and our team can assist.

Can I Cover Disability Support Alongside Other Modalities in One Membership?

Yes. IICT currently approves 1,400+ modalities, including aged care, personal care and a wide range of complementary therapies. If you practise more than one, you can have all your modalities recognised under one simple membership. Insurance access applies to all approved modalities listed on your membership, so there’s no need to manage multiple policies or pay additional fees for each service you provide.
