Membership FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need professional indemnity insurance as a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner?

Yes, professional indemnity insurance is essential for any practising TCM therapist. It protects you if a client makes a claim relating to the advice, treatment or services provided during a consultation. Whether you’re offering acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine or a combination of modalities, having the right cover in place means you can focus on helping your clients without unnecessary risk to your business.

Does IICT membership include insurance for Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Membership and insurance are two separate products. Your IICT membership gives you professional recognition, credibility and access to exclusive member insurance rates, but the insurance policy itself is purchased separately. This keeps things flexible, so you only pay for the cover that suits your unique needs and practice.

What does the insurance policy cover for TCM practitioners?

IICT members can access both professional indemnity and public liability insurance. Be sure to review the policy wording carefully and consider comparing policies to ensure the coverage aligns with your objectives, the services you provide and your specific financial situation. This information is general advice only and does not account for your personal circumstances. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

Can I cover acupuncture and Chinese medicine together in one membership?

Absolutely. IICT currently approves 1,400+ modalities, including Chinese herbal medicine, remedial massage and many other natural therapies, so you can have all your modalities recognised under one simple membership. Insurance access applies to all approved modalities listed on your membership, so there’s no need to manage multiple memberships for each discipline you practise. If you also practise acupuncture, that’s covered too.

Do I need a bachelor's degree or specific qualifications to join IICT as a TCM practitioner?

IICT recognises practitioner-level qualifications only. Short courses, continuing education or personal development courses are not accepted. Minimum training requirements vary depending on the modality and are assessed at the time of application. In some regions, such as Australia, TCM practitioners may also need to hold registration with the relevant national board, such as the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia, in addition to IICT membership. If you’re unsure whether your qualifications meet the requirements, feel free to contact us before applying.

Does IICT membership help with private health insurance rebates for clients?

IICT is a professional membership body, not a health fund registration. Most complementary therapy modalities, including many TCM disciplines, do not qualify for private health fund rebates. If health fund registration is a requirement for your practice, you will need to seek membership with a government-regulated association. For more information, we recommend checking directly with your health fund.
